Which is bigger, Greenland or China? With the traditional Mercator map Greenland and China look to be the same size but in reality China is almost 4 times larger! In response to such discrepancies, Dr. Arno Peters created an equal area map, a new world map that dramatically improves the accuracy of how we see the Earth.

A map that not only shows true size comparisons, but also turns the world upside down to challenge North-South perceptions. Based on the popularity of the Peters concept of equal area, we produced a similar map, the Hobo Dyer Projection, which offers less elongation than the Peters map but more compression at the poles.

This south-at-the-top map is a great educational tool. It challenges basic notions of ''up'' and ''down.'' True ''up'' from our standpoint on the earth, is away from the center, and the earth in space has no inherent up or down. To emphasize this point, this map includes an inset, which shows global views from various angles. In addition, other inset maps show examples of a variety of projections with notes on their merits and limitations. Laminated seconds may be available - please check our "specials & bargains."

Based on the popularity of the Peters concept of equal area, we produced a similar map, the Hobo Dyer Projection, which offers less elongation than the Peters map but more compression at the poles. This is the map that President Jimmy Carter used to display his agency's efforts at his Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in December 2002.

This is the most exciting and beautiful new map we've seen in quite a while. It is a 14-sided polyhedral projection addressing both distortion and partitioning of land masses. The butterfly layout combines legibility and low distortion. This prototype (almost-equal-area) wall map (1996 version) is available now at a special price. The new full-size equal area map is expected in February of '09.

Unique downunder viewpoint with cheeky Aussie humor. Stuart McArthur drew his first South-up map when he was 12 years old. At age 15, after being tormented for coming from the ''bottom of the world,'' Stuart resolved to one day publish a map with Australia at the top. Six years later, while at Melbourne University, he produced the world's first ''modern'' south-up map and launched it on Australia day in 1979. It has sold over 350,000 copies to date.

A good example of a "bad" global viewing map (although excellent for navigational purposes). A terrific tool for teachers to contrast with one of our equal-area world maps. Politically up-to-date as of 1993, this map was a joint venture project between MapLink and a professional artist & fabric designer. It is gorgeous! This display consists of a laminated Peters Mini-map (11" x 17") along with 6 individual laminated Mercator comparison panels. The Peters map has two sturdy grommets at the top for hanging. At the bottom left is a 3rd grommet with a key ring. The ring holds the 6 comparison panels (taken from the bottom of the wall size map) and a Peters laminated postcard. These were originally used by our retailers for point-of-purchase educational displays. Th
