Which is bigger, Greenland or China? With the traditional Mercator map Greenland and China look to be the same size but in reality China is almost 4 times larger! In response to such discrepancies, Dr. Arno Peters created an equal area map, a new world map that dramatically improves the accuracy of how we see the Earth. Come in a variety of formats: laminated; paper folded; spring roller mounted, oversize laminated, and synthetic paper oversize. Standard size is 35" x 50" SPECIAL $10 Clearance maps may be available HERE
This south-at-the-top map is a great educational tool. It challenges basic notions of ''up'' and ''down.'' True ''up'' from our standpoint on the earth, is away from the center, and the earth in space has no inherent up or down. To emphasize this point, this map includes an inset, which shows global views from various angles. In addition, other inset maps show examples of a variety of projections with notes on their merits and limitations. Prices vary $13.95 - $375. Also we have clearance maps for $8.50; and laminated seconds for $14.95 - to order these click here or go to our ''specials & bargains'' tab in the left hand toolbar. The 2x3' size is new and is our featured special for Father's Day 2010. We also have the 2x3' size available in two types of special archival / ECF (elemental chlorine free) paper.
This Raleigh Dymaxion (TM) map is a desktop version at 1/4th of the size of the 22''x34'' full-size version we produced. It is perfect for a student desktop map, as it shows the sizes and shapes of the continents accurately. The paper format can be cut up and folded into the 20-sided polyhedron that Fuller started with. Or this size, when laminated, can make a snappy addition to your breakfast table as an exciting placemat. It's educational, as it has a lengthy explanation printed on the reverse side. The text on the map (being reduced in size) is hard to read, but the desktop version has the same vivid colors of the original. Leonard Guelke created this projection to tell you exactly how far it was from anywhere on Earth to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Draw a straight line on this map from Toronto to anywhere in the world and, with some simple math, you've got the real-world distance. In order to achieve this benefit, you need to sacrifice some shapes and sizes. The traditional world map is poorly suited to understanding global relationships in our present era in which these relationships have become increasingly important to all peoples on earth. Traditional and current world maps are mostly centered on the equator, and project the round world as a rectangle or ellipse. This means the world is broken up along the edges, usually in the middle of an ocean (east/west) or at the poles (north/south), providing the map user with an inadequate image of global relationships. The equator-centered world maps all distort distance relationships. This makes it look as though the shortest routes between places invariably follow lines of latitude. The map user has no idea that direct routes often go over or near the poles or across a divided ocean. A REVOLUTIONARY NEW MAP FOR PEOPLE IN THE USA
One of the most unusual maps of the USA we've ever seen. A south-on-top map, it features meticulously hand-drawn rivers and mountain ranges. The divisions between states are represented by dotted lines, so one sees the physical relief features first and foremost. This is a view of North America as if one were seeing it from an orbiting space station somewhere over Canada. Approx. 2' x 3'. Free second map if you send us a JPG image of your colored-in version of the map.
You will be amazed at the elaborate detail of this map. A south-on-top map of Central and South America featuring meticulously hand-drawn rivers and mountain ranges. Approx. 2' x 3'. Seen as if one were viewing it from an orbiting space station, the physical relief features are prominent. It’s a perfect coloring activity for children or for families working together.
