This book, part of the National Council for Geographic Education Pathways in Geography series, identifies the current lack of knowledge of the area, and offers ways to “cultivate increased awareness on the part of Americans and within the US educational system concerning the region, its people, and its complexities.” In area (8 million square miles) and population (980 million), with 52 countries and nearly 1,000 distinct ethnic groups, the Sub-Saharan region is an increasingly important focus in the study of world geography.
 
The book links with
Geography for Life Standards and suggests distinct goals for students (e.g, develop an interest in and positive attitude toward Africa; explore cultural commonalities and cultural diversity in Africa; learn how the forces of conflict and cooperation among people influence the division and control of earth’s surface). It provides background information and a wealth of resources to provide guideposts for teaching about this complex region. Specific examples include creating puzzles, devising games to enhance the learning experience for various student age groups, team competitions, analysis of books and films about specific areas or cultural groups, and lesson plans for teachers.
